I’m not quite sure how popular 3D gaming is amongst the PC crowd. 3D is all the rage in cinema nowadays and tons of people are buying up 3D televisions, but you don’t hear a whole lot of talk about 3D computer monitors and gaming.
Now, I’m not much for 3D movies. While I found them entertaining in the beginning, due to the fact that every single director and his mother is making a movie in 3D nowadays, the effect is starting to get old. I am also not too fond of 3D televisions either. I find having to wear 3D glasses whenever I want to watch tv to be tiresome and irritating and the glasses are just another thing for me to break or lose.
3D gaming is a field I never really put much thought into. I was able to give a 3D game a whirl once at a computer store. It was a racing game with lots of things on the road, like barrels, cones, signs, etc…, and when your car drove through them, they would fly at your face. I thought this was a rather neat idea but after playing for about five minutes, I was over the whole thing.
As of the beginning of April, Samsung has begun mass producing a number of transparent LCD panels. These panels are somewhat larger and a bit more marketable than the company’s 19″ transparent AMOLED prototype PC monitors that were shown off earlier in the year. These new panels measure 22″ and come with a native 1680×1-50 resolution and a 500:1 standard contrast ratio, but that’s not all. These new monitors will be available in both a monochrome and color variety. Samsung went on to explain that these new panels make use of ambient light as opposed to backlight like traditional LCD panels. This means that the entire screen will consume about 10% of the energy that a conventional 22″ LCD panel uses. Transparency levels are rated at 20% for the monochrome version and 15% for the color version. This allows a user to see objects behind the panel with information contained on the panel as a foreground overlay. However, seeing this monitor in upcoming consumer-grade monitors from Samsung isn’t likely. Samsung stated that the real intentions for these screens would be for commercial situations like shop windows or billboards where they, as Samsung put it, “can become an efficient tool for delivering information and communication.” However, if you truly and desperately need one of these devices, you will be happy to know that Samsung will be including HDMI and USB ports as “friendly connectivity options.” Unfortunately, neither an exact price nor a specific release date has been confirmed by Samsung.
